Operación San Lorenzo

Post by Snaith-Priory » Tue Jun 05, 2018 10:58 am

In 2010, 33 miners were trapped 700m (2300 feet) underground at the San José copper and gold mine near Copiapó, in northern Chile.

The accident caught the minds of people throughout the world as everyone watched and prayed for their rescue. The miners were trapped below ground for 69 days, and were eventually rescued in a daring mission that was only possible with worldwide resources and expertise.

Why is this relevant to us? Because St Lawrence, among many other things, is a Patron Saint of Miners, and the rescue operation was named in his honour. Operación San Lorenzo or, literally, Operation Saint Lawrence was the name given to the mission that successfully extracted all 33 miners.

Why not provide an information board providing details and images of the whole incident, exploring the deep religious faith that enabled the miners to survive so long underground, and the rescue mission itself........
